Tom Peters, one of my favorite business authors, says there’s no difference between leaders and managers. I think he’s wrong and I think he’s right. Wrong because there is a difference as Buckingham and Coffman explain below:

“Great managers are not miniexecutives waiting for leadership to be thrust upon them. Great leaders are not simply managers who have developed sophistication. The core activities of a manager and a leader are simply different. It is entirely possible for a person to be a brilliant manager and a terrible leader. But it is just as possible for a person to excel as a leader and fail as a manager. And, of course, a few exceptionally talented individuals excel at both.

“If companies confuse the two roles by expecting every manager to be a leader, or if they define ‘leader’ as simply a more advanced form of ‘manager,’ then the all-important ‘catalyst’ role will soon be undervalued, poorly understood, and poorly played. Gradually the company will fall apart.”

Alas, Peters is also right because that ship has sailed. There’s no point to arguing the distinction because too many conflate the two.

Nevertheless, let me add one bit of nuance. Individual contributors can be leaders without managing anyone or anything.

What do you do if you grew up in the black church, attended Sunday School every Sunday until you were almost through high school, and then something happened? I can’t put my finger on it exactly. It was a loooooong time ago.

A few things happened. I didn’t care for Martin Luther King, Jr. because he wasn’t militant enough for me. But then he was assassinated. I don’t know. Maybe I had already started pulling away. Five years earlier, my church didn’t participate in the 1963 March on Washington. I didn’t understand anything at that age, especially why.

As I became old enough to think for myself, I moved away from the church. Years later, there was a time when we were thinking about going back. We attended services at a few black churches in the Palo Alto area, but none really appealed to me.

We attended one service featuring a visiting pastor from New York. His name was Preston Washington. I first met Preston as a student at Williams College, and I revered him! Curtis Manns, a former Assistant Dean at the college, let me know he would be visiting. It was great seeing Preston again after so many years, and his sermon was awe-inspiring. I would have loved going to his church. Alas, that was not to be. There was the distance and then time. Preston was taken away from us way too soon.

When I visited a local church from my childhood denomination, the Church of God in Christ, it just didn’t feel the same. When I went to a local baptist church, the service felt too sterile.

That’s the thing. Style of worship is very particular and important. I was looking for what I had, what I walked away from, and couldn’t find it, probably because it didn’t exist any longer. Maybe it exists only in my head?

There’s one thing from church that is still with me, though: It’s the music, especially songs like “Let Us Go to the House of the Lord” (this recording was how I began the first episode of #JazzChurch last year - replay here). Listening again just now, I hear that I was emotional then too. Good emotions!

Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ta-Nehisi Coates joining Howard University faculty - The Washington Post

In a statement issued through her attorneys, Hannah-Jones said Tuesday that she could not work at UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

“I cannot imagine working at and advancing a school named for a man who lobbied against me, who used his wealth to influence the hires and ideology of the journalism school, who ignored my 20 years of journalism experience, all of my credentials, all of my work, because he believed that a project that centered Black Americans equaled the denigration of white Americans,” she said.

“Since the second grade when I started being bused into white schools, I’ve spent my entire life proving that I belong in elite white spaces that were not built for Black people,” Hannah-Jones said.

“I decided that I didn’t want to do that anymore, that Black professionals should feel free — and actually perhaps an obligation — to go to our own institutions and bring our talents and resources to our own institutions and help to build them up as well.“

It’s Friday, early afternoon. I’m sitting on my deck, having had a most hectic morning. I missed a Board meeting to work on a presentation that was due this morning. We’ll be seeking approval for three bond financing transactions, the details of which are all still in-flight. We were an hour late, but still okay. #whew!

Next up was a meeting with part of our financing team (representing advisers, our lawyers, the bankers, and their counsel). We were working to finalize the terms of one transaction when a new idea popped up. I quickly conferred with colleagues and decided to incorporate the new idea into our deal. #dingdingding!!

The meeting was about to end when I suggested something ridiculous. I asked one of our advisers to get up, rack up the balls on the pool table that’s been behind him in all of our Zoom calls, and then break them. He did, it was hilarious, and folks said we should have all of our meetings like this one.

So, suggesting stupid unusual things can sometimes be so #winning!!! :-)

These events confirmed another thought I’ve had lately: I #LOVE doing #BondDeals. They present opportunities to do big things, and I #LOVE doing big things!

Financial engineering is an area where I’m free to act. I’m trusted, and, working with some pretty awesome colleagues, we’ve entirely reshaped the finances here in the last nine years, with still more reshaping to come.

I’m trusted in this space, and it’s fun. We’ve made progress.

Now about some of those other spaces…

Okay, back to #winning! Did I mention I’ve been sitting out on our deck under an umbrella? Right now, it’s 83º with a light breeze. I’ve been sitting here in a tee-shirt, shorts, living – I mean working – the life of Riley. No complaints, despite what I wrote above.

One more thing. I’m losing a fantastic team member. She’s moving on to bigger and hopefully better things. She’s made a tremendous impact here and will continue on a grander scale. Of course, I have mixed emotions, but this isn’t the first time. I’ve had other great people move on to other opportunities. One example is the banker we met with this morning. He was part of my team when I arrived here nine and half years ago. A little over a year later, I wrote:

[On my first] morning, I witnessed a great presentation about my company’s financial outlook. That evening, when I went home, I told my wife, “Thank God that guy works for me!” Well, effective today, he no longer does. He’s moved on to a new career, doing almost identically what I did many years ago at the same point in my career. I wish him luck, and will miss his energy, curiosity, and drive!

The new idea this morning came from him, and it’s not the first time. The great people seem to always be around, with energy, curiosity, drive, and a penchant for helping.

That’s #winning, too!!!

I analyzed Tucker Carlson’s January 6th FBI conspiracy segment. It’s a masterclass in how conspiracy theories work, a thread.

First, TC activates his audience members’ “flight or fight” response. This is key because it activates the body’s natural responses to fear–adrenalin & cortisol flood the brain, which “hijacks” the rational part of the brain, preventing critical thinking.

TC activated the f/f response by telling the story of a supposedly racially motivated shooting spree in which an African-American man targeted white men. He uses evocative language that puts his viewer in the place of the person shot, reaffirming they are in real danger.

But TC says that it’s not the shooter’s fault, it’s actually a reasonable response to what political leaders have done: focus on race to divide us. This general principle in his lede allows him to segue into the real topic: the government “regime” punishing “political dissent.”

He’s activated his audience’s flight/fight response, he has their attention, but not their reason, and now he deploys his conspiracy narrative. Remember what I’ve explained about why conspiracy is so powerful & effective: it is a “self-sealing” narrative. It can’t be disproven. If you deny the plot, the conspiracist accuses you of a cover-up, of trying to suppress the truth or free speech. If you deny the facts, the conspiracist says “they won’t tell you the truth.”

There is no fact or truth that can puncture the conspiracy theory, the logic of conspiracy covers it up.
